Back in 1991 my family had just gotten Mtv and boy did it change the way I thought about everything. That may seem hard to imagine now with all the Jersey Shore style trash on the channel, but back then they played music videos which meant I got to see rock stars. As long as I can remember I loved rock stars, since the California Raisins really. And in 1991 there were some great ones. you could watch Kurt Cobain spitting at cameras, Bono strutting around multi-million dollar stage spectacles, or Axl Rose melting down over and over.
I loved R.E.M.’s Micheal Stipe. He was smart and just the right measure of flashy and humble. and he had opinions. I will never forget watching him win seemingly dozens of Video Music Awards that year. For each award won he had different blank t shirts which he adorned with political slogans. I can hardly remember the slogans on those whole sale blank clothes but I remember loving the idea.
In my own life whenever I want to make a point in a public way I will break out the wholesale blank clothing and using either a marker or an iron on make big bold statements. I have made my love of songs or political candidates known. It is a great way to wear your heart on your sleeve or more likely on your chest.
